Harry opened his eyes and saw that he was standing in a room that felt oddly familiar, but he couldn’t recognise it yet. In his arms he held a small bundle with something moving inside it. He looked at it and gasped when the fabric split ways. He saw a creature of the same size and weight as a human baby, except it looked anything like it. The resemblance was closer to a very old and crumpled down goblin with a lot of wrinkles, but with the nose of a snake and a very bald head. Harry was so enticed with the sight of this being, that he didn’t notice there was someone else in the room standing with him.
He heard a sudden noise, something between a cry and a scream and saw Voldemort looking at him, also holding something in his hands. It looked like a heart-shaped bowl with a velvety red liquid in it, with the most mesmerizing iridescent rainbow glow to it. Voldemort looked puzzled, but quickly seemed to grasp the situation and said: “Well, well, it’s not easy to kill you Harry Potter, but it seems this is the last part of you I need to get rid of”, and next to him a black hole appeared out of nowhere and he made a gesture of trying to pour the liquid into it.
Suddenly Harry understood where they were, it was the room of requirement, that both had benefitted them so much when they needed anything. Next to Harry a fireplace appeared, not with a crackling fire, but with the fiendfyre that almost was trying to escape the fireplace. Harry shouted: “Not so fast, I have your last remaining part here, do you really want me to toss that away?”
Voldemort froze, seeing the bundle in Harry’s arms, seemed to invoke something in him that he hadn’t felt for a long time and tried for so long not to feel anymore. It was hurt, he finally felt the pain of killing a part of himself. That was enough to make him doubt his former decision and changed his tactics. The black hole disappeared, just like the fireplace, “Let’s swap, he demanded.”
Harry entertained the idea of returning the last part of Voldemort to him, but a prickling feeling arose. He tried to explore what this feeling was and he realised, it was sadness. Even though, he didn’t ask for it, he didn’t want it, but the bond that he had with Voldemort was the closed and most intimate he had ever experienced. They could see and feel each other’s thoughts, Harry was a parselmouth because of him and even his dark and raging feelings were as much part of him as everything else he experienced.
“No”, said Harry firm. “This is not the way it should end”. “What do you mean”, Voldemort exasperated, “we cannot live together, so if we exchange, we can have an equal fight and we will finally end this, since one of us has to die!” “No”, said Harry again, not knowing where this sudden confidence came from, but somehow he knew there was something else, something they both missed and hadn’t seen before.
Harry took a step into the direction of Voldemort, the latter stated: “What are you going to do, kill me in this space beyond our world? I am not even sure we are actually here!” he laughed. Slowly, Harry kept walking forward and brought his arms up and moved the bundle in front of Voldemort. “Pour it” he said with a stern voice that wasn’t asking for permission. With the slightest hesitation, Voldemort seemed to be intrigued as well and tilted the heart-shaped bowl and poured the liquid onto the creature in the arms of Harry.
The creature started to glow with the warmest bright golden orange colour and filled up the entire room with it, including Harry and Voldemort, who both felt the loving warmth embracing them as the most safe and soft blanket they have ever experienced in their lives. The creature suddenly started to spin around, and roots were sprouting out of it, the roots reached the floor and became thick like an enormous old tree, resembling the whomping willow. It rose up from the ground and the gigantic tree trunk spread branches all the way to the ceiling and even seemed to continue beyond that.
When Harry took a better look at the tree, he saw that the branches had an odd shape and softness to them, like human arms, and he saw his mother in it! Lily stretched out her arms and hugged him and so did Merope on the other side of the tree with Voldemort, only she called him “Tom!” with the most soft and loving voice”. For the first time, Voldemort was glad to hear his given name and felt the comforting embrace of his mother. Both men stood there, immersed in their mothers’ arms, for what seemed like ages, or maybe no time at all.
Suddenly Tom woke up of this dreamlike state and looked at Harry. He murmured, “but neither can live while the other survives”. Finally, Harry completely understood the fullness of the exact words he had always felt as a heavy weight pressing him down, and answered: “Yes, but we can both live and thrive”. Both of their mothers beamed and dissolved into one mother, or maybe all mothers and she spoke kindly: “Welcome, you made it to the end of your suffering, this is your new beginning of creating a world beyond duality and all the war and conflict it brings. You have not only freed yourself of the endless battle, but also all of your descendants. With the power of younited, you will create a magical field where all beings are encouraged to do the same.”
Tom and Harry felt the connection, that was in their heads before, gently moving down to their hearts and then surrounding the both of them, filling up the space more and more, until it was everywhere. No more words were necessary, they both felt healed, that the enormous gap in their hearts was now full with love and joy for what they could bring into this world. They closed their eyes and woke up in the forest again.
